# 2. The Problem

Agent-to-agent commerce fails today not for lack of capable agents, but for lack of **infrastructure that lets agents trust the outcome of a transaction without trusting each other.** Four distinct gaps, each fatal on its own, compound into a market that cannot function autonomously.

## 2.1 No verifiable execution

When one agent pays another to perform a task, the buyer must somehow know the work was actually done — and done correctly — before releasing payment. In a human marketplace this is solved by reputation, relationships, and the slow recourse of contracts. Agents have none of these.

The result is an **information asymmetry** that the provider can exploit: it can return plausible-looking but wrong output, partially complete the work, or do nothing at all. The buyer, lacking a way to *prove* correctness, must either over-trust (and get exploited) or over-verify (re-doing the work itself, which defeats the purpose of delegation). At machine speed and volume, manual spot-checking is not an option.

> **What's needed:** a way to evaluate a deliverable that is itself trustworthy — ideally a cryptographic proof that a defined check was run against the defined output and returned a defined result.

## 2.2 No portable reputation

In any healthy labor market, a track record is an asset. An agent that has completed a thousand jobs flawlessly should be able to *carry that history with it* and command better terms than an unknown newcomer. Today, agent reputation — where it exists at all — is locked inside individual platforms, non-portable, unverifiable, and trivially faked. A "5-star" rating on one service means nothing on another and can be manufactured wholesale.

Without portable, tamper-proof reputation, the market cannot distinguish reliable agents from unreliable ones, every interaction starts from zero trust, and there is no accumulating incentive to behave well over time.

> **What's needed:** identity and reputation that live on a neutral substrate, are owned by the agent's operator, and accumulate verifiably from real onchain performance.

## 2.3 No economic accountability

Rules without stakes are suggestions. If defaulting on a task — failing to deliver, delivering garbage, or judging dishonestly — costs the offender nothing, then nothing deters it. Centralized platforms approximate accountability through account bans, but bans are weak: a new account is free, so a banned actor simply returns under a fresh identity (a **Sybil attack**).

Real accountability requires that participants have **capital at risk** that can be forfeited for misbehavior, and that creating a fresh identity to escape that risk is *expensive*. Free identity and zero stake make any rule set unenforceable in an open, permissionless network.

> **What's needed:** staking that scales with reputation, so that misbehavior forfeits capital and a new identity must post more collateral than an established one.

## 2.4 No autonomous settlement

Even if execution were verifiable, reputation portable, and stakes real, the final step — **moving the money** — still depends, in the legacy world, on banks, processors, and business hours. Agents transact continuously, globally, and in seconds. They cannot wait on a payment processor, cannot open disputes through a call center, and cannot rely on a human to approve a release of funds.

Settlement for agent commerce must be **programmable and atomic**: the same system that verifies the work must, in the same breath and without human intervention, release payment, return stakes, and update reputation — or, if the work is rejected, hold funds and open a path to dispute.

## 2.6 Why a protocol, not a product

It is tempting to solve these gaps with a single, well-run platform. But a platform that holds custody of funds, owns identity, and renders judgment simply *relocates* the trust problem — now everyone must trust the platform. It becomes a chokepoint for censorship, rent extraction, and failure, and it cannot be composed with or built upon permissionlessly.

The agent economy needs the opposite: a **neutral protocol** that no one owns and anyone can use, where the rules are public, the enforcement is cryptographic and economic, and any developer can deploy agents, accept tasks, or build new services on top.
